One of the first people we featured on Backseat Mafia was Stop Drop Robot. Immediately attracted by his housey/dubsteppy productions, it was easy to fall for his music. We even got him to do us a mix (check it out, its brilliant) and he told us then he would have a single out shortly.
Well, that shortly has arrived. Running tricks is out now, available to buy from his bandcamp page here. But here’s the thing, Stop Drop Robot is no longer a he, now a they. And with it has come a deft change of direction.
Stop Drop Robot – Running Tricks
We spoke to Nathan, the former singular Stop Drop Robot, and now spokesperson for the new group (well, we’ve appointed him spokesperson, by means of the fact that he spoke to us after we spoke to him). He says of the new release -
We set up out studio down at a student house on Eccy road (in Sheffield) with the intentions of writing music. Most of the stuff we came up with was a bit of a haze as we ended up having a few ‘light beverages’ but this was the stand out track from the night so we re-recorded it in a more professional state. We actually recorded it just before Christmas. The video itself, we just wanted to get across what were going to be all about with the new band set up which is why it was a performance based video with lighting shows [it] was shot in a very ‘interesting’ rave warehouse in Sheffield. where there was still people partying in there from the day before
What has come out of these sessions is a track that fuses together, electro with an indie-funk sort of instrumentation. It hammers away into your consciousness, and stays there. It kicks into life with huge basslines and keys work, with multi-effects on the vocals intertwining with his storytelling. Its fresh, funky and very hip.
All is looking well, indeed exciting, in the Stop Drop Robot camp.
